South Bend Airport Reports Fourth Consecutive Month of Increased Passengers Numbers

Tuesday, January 4, 2011

SOUTH BEND, Ind — November marked many things for the South Bend Airport (SBN); the opening of Phase I of the airport's new terminal expansion, complementary Wi-Fi, a new restaurant facility - and a surge in the number of passengers taking advantage of the newly updated facility. For the fourth consecutive month, SBN is reporting increased passenger numbers. November 2010 reports show that total passenger traffic at the South Bend Airport was up 7.7 percent over November 2009. A total of 51,382 passengers chose to fly through SBN this November.

"We are delighted to welcome so many travelers to the South Bend Airport," said Executive Director, John Schalliol. "The combination of competitively priced airfares, shorter lines and less hassle make SBN the preferred airport choice for Michiana residents" adds Schalliol. "Our hub connectivity gives passengers the opportunity to connect anywhere in the world from SBN, and the new facility and amenities are allowing us to offer our patrons the airport experience that they expect when flying into or out of SBN."

Every SBN carrier posted an increase in traffic. Allegiant Air, whose passenger totals were up 11.75 percent, carried 9,826 total passengers for the month. United Express reported a 12.71 percent increase, carrying 14,719 passengers and Continental posted an 8.57 percent increase and served 3,308 passengers. Delta Air Lines, SBN's largest carrier, reported serving nearly 22,780 passengers this month, a 3.29 percent increase over November 2009.
Nonstop flights to Phoenix/Mesa on Allegiant Air began in June 2010, and the first phase of the airport's new 45,000-square-foot concourse expansion opened on November 17, 2010. When completed in full, in December 2011, the terminal will feature five new gates and increased passenger amenities including a full service deli, business center, gift shop, and children's play area.
