Stressed About TSA? Plan Ahead With These Tips

From the 3-1-1 Liquids Rule to flying with cremated remains, there are specific restrictions to what you can (and can’t) bring on an airplane. Coupled with tighter Transportation Security Administration (TSA) protocols, it can feel like you’re shuffled through to your gate.

Thankfully, when you choose a local airport like South Bend International Airport (SBN), you’ll be in and out of TSA quickly, giving you time to grab a treat or read up on your itinerary before your flight.

We’ve catalogued some important tips and guidelines for navigating TSA smoothly (and why choosing SBN will save you some time) below.

Navigating TSA Effectively

You spent a considerable amount of time planning your trip, but have you dedicated time to planning your logistics? The rule of thumb for navigating TSA: Plan ahead.

According to TSA, planning ahead and packing properly can facilitate the screening process and ease your travel experience at the airport. TSA has created a comprehensive list of permissible and prohibited items to use as reference as you pack.

Please exercise caution as carrying a prohibited item through security can not only delay your departure (or halt it completely), but also carries stiff penalties of up to $13,333 per violation per person. Depending on the item and the circumstance in which it’s discovered, you may also face a criminal referral..

The Rule On Carrying Liquids

For carry-on bags, you’re allowed to bring onto the plane one quart-size resealable bag. All liquids, aerosols, creams and gels must be in travel-sized containers that are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item. Larger items, such as full-sized shampoo bottles, must be placed in your checked bag.

To make it simple, remember this rule:

  • 3 ounce containers or smaller
  • 1 quart-size, clear plastic bag
  • 1 bag per traveler

Consider TSA Pre-Check

SBN participates in the TSA Pre-Check program. This program simplifies your screening process, allowing you to keep your shoes, laptops, liquids, belts and light jackets on your person as you navigate through the airport.

According to TSA, 92% of TSA Pre-Check passengers waited less than 5 minutes in May 2019. Pre-Check also has a nationwide reach with more than 200 airports and 67 airlines partnering with the program.

Shorter Lines? Choose Local

At SBN, we want you to have a great experience from the moment you park to take-off. Because SBN is a smaller airport by design, your TSA screening process is oftentimes much shorter than other, larger airports in the region.

In addition to TSA’s guidelines, we’ve compiled some noteworthy links and information on our website about our screening and security measures and quick links for flyers who need additional accommodations during this process.

We work hard to make your trip seamless and (hopefully) stress-free. Do your part by planning ahead and staying savvy on the dos-and-don’ts of air travel. We’ll see you on the other side.
