Holiday air travel: flying safely

The holiday season is now in full swing. People are traveling now more than in the past 9 months. So today, we’re going to talk about how employees at South Bend International Airport are keeping terminals and planes safe for holiday travel.

Earlier this year, we posted a blog detailing how South Bend International Airport is continuing to install and maintain safety protocols. Since then, we’ve only learned more about the virus and how to keep passengers safe. In addition to safety measures, we’ll talk about why experts have vouched for safe air travel for the holiday season.

Safety measures at South Bend International Airport

Back in March, we ensured the safety of our passengers flying to and from South Bend International Airport. We talked about these protocols in a recent blog, shortly after the coronavirus began, and continue to review and update them to reflect the latest findings.

South Bend mask protocol

When traveling for the holidays, it’s only inevitable that we find ourselves indoors with others, whether waiting at a gate or walking through the terminal at South Bend International Airport. Wearing a mask can reduce our chances of contracting the virus by up to 65%. Combined with other measures, such as social distancing, the risk of contracting coronavirus is reduced significantly.

Consider getting tested prior to flying

If you’ve been socially active, working at the office, or acting in an essential role of any kind, it might be good to get tested. Additionally, depending on whom we plan to visit, getting tested or maintaining a period of isolation may decrease risk of spreading the virus.

Maintain social distancing

We’ve all heard about the six feet rule by now. Distance reduces the chance that coughing, sneezing, or even breathing can carry the disease far enough to retain the necessary mass and density that causes infection. It’s this combination that so greatly lowers the chance of contracting the virus.

Wash your hands

Soap and water can go a long way toward taming the virus. To ensure you’ve killed off any remaining germs and illnesses, bring along a hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol. You will also find hand sanitizer at each entrance into the airport, at the TSA checkpoint, and at each gate.

Understand your traveling party’s demographics

Prior to holiday travel, take inventory of your party and those you’ll be visiting. Is someone in your family or party more likely to be troubled by the virus? Are you and your family traveling to see grandparents or great grandparents for the holidays?

These are the questions you must ask yourself before taking your holiday trip. Should you take the proper precautions with a full understanding of the variables, there’s very little reason to worry.

Updated information: air travel is relatively safe

Flying requires first going through security lines and airport terminals, putting us in relative proximity to people and surfaces. However, it’s important to note that most illnesses, including the coronavirus, have a low risk of spreading on flights–particularly when people wear masks

It’s important to take precautions, and confined areas do increase the risk for contraction, but the circulation on airplanes helps to lower the risk of transmission, maintaining a virus-free atmosphere.

Wear your mask, wash your hands, and maintain your social distance. If you follow these simple protocols, you will keep yourself safe for holiday travel!
