Airport safety protocols that remain in place
Many of South Bend’s COVID safety protocols will be familiar to you. They’re the same public health and safety measures we’ve been taking throughout the pandemic to keep our travelers safe.
With official commitments from Allegiant, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines, it’s our expectation that travelers pledge to abide by these measures as well.
The most important safety protocol–wearing a mask–remains in place. The TSA requires all travelers to wear a mask while in airports and aboard passenger aircraft for both their safety and the safety of others.
Hand sanitizers and general hand hygiene
Hand hygiene has been at the forefront of safety protocols since the very beginning of the pandemic. Nothing has changed about this, as nothing has changed about the virus’ transmission.
Sanitizer stations have been established at key points throughout the airport. Travelers are strongly encouraged to take advantage of these stations for the benefit and safety of all our travelers.
Custodial staff continues to clean high-contact surfaces
The custodial staff here at South Bend is working overtime to ensure that high-contact surfaces remain germ-free. In line with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) protocols, our custodial staff focuses on high-traffic, high-contact areas such as bathrooms, handrails, cupholders, and many, many more.
Floor graphics remain in crucial areas throughout the airport
For many of us, social distancing may feel automatic by now. Even so, studies show that enforcing social distancing decreases the likelihood of infection. As we slowly return to something like normal, it’s more important than ever to stay disciplined and to stay 6-feet apart.
Travelers will find social distancing graphics in most ‘common areas’ such as baggage claim and ticketing lines. Travelers are encouraged to follow the distances suggested for both the safety and comfort of all travelers.
Public Service Announcements remind travelers of airport safety measures
South Bend’s staff makes intermittent announcements throughout the day, reminding passengers about our public health and safety measures.. It may feel redundant, and we know travelers are excited about Summer travel plans, but the importance of these messages cannot be overstated.
Airport safety measures that have changed
As the pandemic continues, some usual regulations have been relaxed to accommodate for easier travel. While not drastic, these minor changes facilitate a safer, more enjoyable experience for everyone choosing to travel through South Bend.
In addition to the changes listed below, be sure to keep tabs on those announced by TSA as they affect all airports equally.
12 oz. liquid sanitizers are now allowed with carry-on
When packing your carry-on, it’s important to be aware of TSA’s 3-1-1 liquid rule. Due to the pandemic, the exception to this rule is liquid hand sanitizers. Each passenger is permitted one 12 oz. liquid hand sanitizer onboard.
Expired driver’s license restrictions have loosened
TSA permits passengers to use driver’s licenses or State ID cards that have expired after March 1, 2020 for one year past the expiration date. This is for those whose ID cards expired after the onset of the pandemic haven’t been able to renew them due to government closures. TSA has loosened these restrictions to accommodate travelers unable to renew their licenses.
